HE PAID IT ALL. IT IS FINISHED!

Christ's Finished Work: What Jesus Completed for You

"When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit." — John 19:30 (NKJV)

What Does "It Is Finished" Mean?

One of the most powerful statements Jesus ever made was His final declaration on the cross:

"It is finished."

The Greek word Jesus used is Tetelestai, which means "paid in full," "completed," or "accomplished."

Jesus was not saying that His life was over—He was announcing that His mission to save humanity from sin had been completed. He had done everything necessary for our salvation.

This is what Christians call the finished work of Christ.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

The Bible teaches that sin separates us from God.

> "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." — Romans 3:23

Because God is holy, sin has a penalty.

> "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." — Romans 6:23

Jesus, who lived a perfect and sinless life, willingly took our place on the cross. He paid the price that we could never pay ourselves.

What Did Jesus Finish?

1. He Paid for Our Sins

Jesus bore the punishment for our sins so that we could receive God's forgiveness.

> "But He was pierced for our transgressions... and by His wounds we are healed." — Isaiah 53:5

Because of His sacrifice, everyone who believes in Him can be forgiven.

2. He Opened the Way to God

Before Jesus died, people could not freely enter God's holy presence. But when He died, the temple curtain was torn in two.

> Matthew 27:50–51

This showed that through Jesus, we now have direct access to God. We no longer need an earthly priest because Jesus is our eternal High Priest.

3. He Defeated Sin and Satan

The cross looked like a defeat, but it was actually Christ's greatest victory.

Jesus defeated:

Sin

Death

Satan

> "Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." — Colossians 2:15

4. He Gave Us New Life

When we put our faith in Christ, we become new people.

> "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation." — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Our past no longer defines us. In Christ, we receive a new identity and a new beginning.

Salvation Is a Gift

Many people think they must earn God's love through good works.

The Bible teaches something different.

> "For by grace you have been saved through faith... not by works, so that no one can boast." — Ephesians 2:8–9

Good works are important, but they are the result of salvation—not the way to obtain it.

Jesus has already completed the work. We simply receive His gift through faith.

What Does This Mean for You Today?

Because of Christ's finished work, you can:

Live free from guilt and condemnation.

Approach God confidently in prayer.

Experience forgiveness and peace.

Walk in victory over sin.

Enjoy the assurance of eternal life.

> "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." — Romans 8:1

Final Thoughts

The message of the cross is simple yet life-changing.

When Jesus declared, "It is finished," He meant that the debt of sin had been paid in full. Nothing needs to be added to His sacrifice. Salvation is available to everyone who believes in Him.

Instead of striving to earn God's acceptance, we are invited to rest in the finished work of Christ and live a life of gratitude, faith, and obedience.

> "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8

Reflection

Have you placed your trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ, or are you still trying to earn what He has already freely given?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for finishing the work of salvation on the cross. Thank You for paying the price for my sins and giving me new life. Help me to trust completely in Your grace and to live each day in the freedom and victory You have won for me. Amen.
